New Mexico Joins the Global Startup Battle with Three Startup Weekends (11/15-17)

This November, three sites in New Mexico will launch Startup Weekend events during Global Entrepreneurship Week and the “Global Startup Battle” from UP Global and Startup Weekend. Sites include Farmington with “Four Corners Startup Weekend,” Las Cruces Startup Weekend and the world’s first high school-focused Startup Weekend, “Teen Startup Weekend” in Albuquerque. These three events in different regions mark a substantial step forward in encouraging startup activity throughout the state and with a wider group of potential entrepreneurs. Bill Bice

Under Bill's leadership as founder and CEO of ProLaw Software, the company achieved an average compound annual growth rate of 78% during the last 5 years as an independent company. ProLaw appeared on the Inc. 500 ranking of the fastest growing companies in the country three years in a row. In 2001, Bill and his team sold ProLaw to the West Group, the foremost provider of integrated information solutions to the legal market and a division of what is now Thomson Reuters.

John Chavez

President, New Mexico Angels

John J. Chavez, is the President of the New Mexico Angels. Since Mr. Chavez has become President, the New Mexico Angels have seen an increase of over 100% in investment in new companies. Additionally, the New Mexico Angels are leading investment deals instead of following the VC's into the deals. Mr. Chavez has created the New Mexico Angels technology showcase forums which allows the New Mexico Angels technology partners, LANL, Sandia and UNM, to showcase technology available for licensing to New Mexico Angel members and guests. Mr. Chavez has been an active angel investor since 2003, investing in thirteen start-up companies and as the sixth employee of two start-up companies that are both still active and growing.

Mr. Chavez is the also the President of Tafoya and Brainerd Partners LLC, a nationwide business development consulting firm. . Prior to creating Tafoya and Brainerd Partners LLC, Mr. Chavez was appointed by New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson as the Cabinet Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department. Zane Fischer

Lawrence Abeyta

Lawrence Abeyta is a software engineer and a serial entrepreneur. He is currently the President and co-founder of OnQueue Technologies, a software company that developed a platform for rapid mobile app publishing and mobile deal targeting via rich analytics. Nina Anthony

Nina Anthony is a former ad agency copywriter who moved to New Mexico 17 years ago in pursuit of a quieter, rural lifestyle. For 9 years, she worked as a freelance writer, primarily working for clients in the New Mexico art and tourism/hospitality industry. She has won numerous ADDY awards for her copywriting and her work has appeared in Print’s Regional Design Annual, Art Direction magazine, and the 70th Art Director Annual. She has been working for WESST since 2002, specializing in search marketing and social media consulting for WESST’s small business clients.

Grace Brill

Since 2003, Grace Brill has helped entrepreneurs and business owners understand market realities through her work with Los Alamos Connect, Technology Ventures Corporation, and her own company, Market Intelligence Solutions. Her particular skill is in finding and making sense out of seemingly unrelated information, and in helping entrepreneurs ask the right questions about customers, competitors and markets. She is an adjunct professor in the Management of Technology Program at UNM’s Anderson School. Her prior work was in marketing and information management with a startup analytics company and with a drug/device manufacturer. She received her B.S. in biology and MBA degrees from the University of New Mexico and holds graduate degrees in both Library Science (University of Missouri) and the History of Science (University of Pennsylvania). R. Bruce Pitt

R. Bruce Pitt has over 35 years of experience as a software developer, engineering, project manager, systems analyst, test manager, engineering senior vice president, business
development vice president, business architect, systems architect, technology and intellectual property evaluator, firmware developer, operating system and device driver developer, applications developer, and internet technologies developer. Mr. Pitt has worked for several Fortune 500 companies and is a veteran of ten startups, three with successful
exits. He has developed products from concept to production to deployment in the Financial Services, Avionics and In-Flight Entertainment, Defense, Medical Instrumentation, Commercial/Retail Computer Hardware, Telephony, Internet Infrastructure Hardware and
Appliances, and Communications Industries. In his last startup, Mr. Pitt worked in the position of CTO and was ultimately given responsibility for all company operations and management as President. In this role, he grew revenues by 50%, built a small development group in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and managed overseas development and support
teams. Mr. Pitt until recently was a member of the Orange County Techcoast Angels organization, an angel investment group investing in, mentoring, and evaluating early stage startups. Mr. Pitt was a mentor at Chapman University in their Entrepreneurs in Residence

Allison Rae

As a marketing consultant and web designer, Allison Rae draws on nearly three decades of corporate and ad agency experience serving business, financial, legal, public-sector and non-profit clients. Her clients have included well-known Fortune and Inc. companies as well as private firms and public-sector agencies. Today she offers strategic marketing and creative services for entrepreneurs, professionals, cultural creatives and small to mid-size businesses throughout the Southwest and California.

Nicholas Seet

Nicholas has been a serial-entrepreneur since his first startup concept was funded and he left his software-development position at Deloitte Consulting. Since that time he has worked to refine his business skills, serving at different times as CTO, CEO, and Founder of Auditude. A part of Auditude (called IntoNow) was spun-off in 2010 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2011. In November that same year, Auditude was acquired by Adobe Systems.

Nicholas received his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 2005. While there he participated in and won the UCLA Knapp Business Plan Competition as well as the Rice University Business Plan Competition, receiving over $1 million in funding and prizes.

Nicholas received a BS in engineering and BA in economics at Harvey Mudd College in 1999. Nicholas is Chinese by ethnicity and was born in Australia. He has two daughters, Anya and Maya. He enjoys public speaking, creative writing, and being with his wife Vivien.
